North Africa has been reduced to its extreme northern coastal regions along the Mediterranean Sea when, in reality, North Africa also includes Sudan, Mauritania and Western Sahara.

Sudan is often considered to be part of North Africa due to its geographic location and cultural ties to the region. Historically, Sudan has been heavily influenced by the Arab and Islamic cultures of North Africa, and many of its major cities, such as Khartoum, have a distinct North African character. Additionally, Sudan's location on the Nile River, which connects it to Egypt, also contributes to its association with North Africa.

However, it is also a part of East Africa due to it being a member of the East African Community, a regional intergovernmental organization of East African states.
