Eduard Wilhelm Bogislav Hartwich Richard von Winterfeld (also Bogislaw; 27 May 1847 – 1920) was a German officer of the Prussian Army, finally General der Kavallerie (General of the Cavalry) and division commander in Münster.

Life

In May 1860, Richard joined the Cadet Corps (Kadettenkorps) in Potsdam.[1] In 1866, he became a Sekondeleutnant (2nd Lieutenant) in the Brandenburgisches Husaren-Regiment (Zietensche Husaren) Nr. 3 (2. Eskadron), renamed Husaren-Regiment „von Zieten“ (Brandenburgisches) Nr. 3 on 27 January 1889. He took part in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. Around 1867/68, he was transferred to the 5. Eskadron, around 1868/69, he was named regimental adjutant.

In 1870/71, he took part in the Franco-German War with his regiment, afterwards the regiment belonged to the occupation army in France. After returning to the German Empire in 1872/73, now a Premierleutnant (1st Lieutenant), he once again served in the 5. Eskadron, one year later again in the 2. Eskadron. In 1876/77, after being promoted to Rittmeister, he took over command of the 2. Eskadron. In 1880, he was put à la suite of his regiment and commanded to the Military Riding Institute (Militär-Reit-Institut) in Hannover as a riding instructor.[2]

On 15 February 1887, he was promoted to Major, still serving with the Military Riding Institute. In 1890, he was transferred to the staff of the 1. Brandenburgisches Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 2 in Schwedt. On 22 August 1891 Major von Winterfeld was delegated with the leadership of the Husaren-Regiment „König Wilhelm I.“ (1. Rheinisches) Nr. 7 in Bonn. On 29 March 1892, he was promoted to Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel) and officially named commander of the regiment. On 27 January 1895, he was promoted to Oberst (Colonel). He was succeeded by Johann von Mechow on 17 April 1897. On 20 May 1897, he was named commander of the 25. Kavallerie-Brigade (Großherzoglich Hessische) in Darmstadt. On 18 May 1901, he was succeeded by Arthur von Schmidt (1849–1918).

On 15 June 1898, he was promoted to Generalmajor. On 18 May 1901, he was named commander of the Garde-Kavallerie-Division in Berlin. He was also a member of the Cavalry Commission (Kavallerie-Kommission). On 16 June 1901, he was promoted to Generalleutnant. On 22 December 1904, he was named commander of the 13. Division in Münster, Arthur Karl Ludwig Friedrich Graf von Klinckowström (1848–1910) took over the Garde-Kavallerie-Division. On 1 March 1906, he retired, was put to disposal (z. D.) and received the Charakter (honorary) as General of the Cavalry.

Family

Richard was the son of retired 2nd Lieutenant Eduard Adolph (Adolf) Detlof Hans von Winterfeld (1823–1890), lord of the manor (Gut Karwe and Gut Muggerkuhl), and his wife Sophie Charlotte Wilhelmine, née von der Chevallerie (1822–1905) from Magdeburg. He had six siblings:[3]

  • Max Karl Emil Gustav (1854–1886), 1st Lieutenant and brigade adjutant, died in Stargard on 30 Mai 1886 due to a horse racing accident

Marriage

On 5 October 1875 in Pischkowitz, 1st Lieutenant von Winterfeld married his fiancée Hedwig Florentine Charlotte Louise Marie Freiin von Zedlitz und Neukirch aus dem Hause Pischkowitz (b. 26 May 1846).
