Genealogists are those who study ancestry and family history using, as far as possible, primary source materials, or secondary sources whose authors have examined primary sources. Since World War II genealogy has become very popular because of immigration out of Europe, and because of the huge population movements inside Europe, notably the Soviet and Communist expulsions of over 17 million people from their homelands in eastern Europe 1945-47. Genealogy also rides alongside local history in these respects. The oldest organisation in Britain is the Society of Genealogists in central London; in Scotland it is the Scottish Genealogy Society, whose HQ and library is in Edinburgh Old Town.
