Tyrconnell (also known as Tír Chonaill) was a kingdom which existed in far north-western Ireland as a sovereign entity from the 13th until the 17th century. It emerged as a break-away from the Kingdom of Aileach in 1201 and was based on the territory of the tribal-kinship group the Cenél Conaill who had inhabited the area as chiefs since around the 5th century. The ruling O'Donnells eventually surrender and regranted their sovereignty to the Tudor Kingdom of Ireland, becoming Earl of Tyrconnell.
