Dalriada (also known as Dál Riata) was a kingdom and Irish colony with varying boundaries, existing roughly between the 5th and 8th centuries. It originated in the northern part of what is today Country Antrim and extended out into Pictish lands in what is today Argyll in the Highlands. For a time it was a sub-kingdom of Ulster, until its kingship was subdued under the Kingdom of the Picts, becoming a couple of centuries later the Kingdom of Scotland. The Convention of Drumceatt of 575 decided that Dál Riata would be an autonomous sovereign territory, instead of under the High Kingship of Ireland, on the condition the king of Dál Riata would assist the Irish High King during times of war.
