John Forbes Kerry (born 11 December 1943) is an American politician and diplomat who was the United States Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017.

A member of the Democratic Party, he was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in the 2004 election, which he lost to incumbent President George W. Bush.

Kerry's paternal grandparents were Jewish but converted to Catholicism. His brother Cam Kerrry has converted to Judaism. He has generally supported various pro-Israel policies, although this may also be related to the influence of the powerful Israel lobby. Kerry has sometimes supported policies and made statements disliked by more extreme Zionists, such as criticizing Israel's settlement policies and stating that Israel risks becoming an apartheid state if peace talks fails.
