Alliance Israélite Universelle is a Jewish organization founded in 1860 by Adolphe Crémieux in Paris as a result of Jews being accused of being participants in Jewish ritual murder in Damascus, Syria. (see Damascus affair) The Alliance wanted the Catholic Church striped of its temporal power and the "prompt fall from power of the pope."[1] Anti-Jewish elements throughout Europe thereafter saw Paris, France as the center of a claimed world Jewish conspiracy.
