Background

In the 19th century the movement was founded by Siberian students in St. Petersburg, by Grigory Potanin, N. M. Yadrincev and people with other backgrounds. In 1863 they prepared a revolt in Siberia together with exiled Poles and Ukrainians, trying to achieve independence and to begin with the development of a west-centred Siberian state, similar to USA. All the group were arrested and taken to prison by the Czarist government.

In the end of the 19th Century and at the beginning of the 20th Century, Siberian nationalists led by Potanin and Yadrincev formed a legal opposition to Russian colonialism in Siberia. They wrote many books, articles, organized research on Siberian culture, economics, races, nationalities, etc. The greatest book of Yadrincev is Siberia as colony (Сибирь как колония) [1], where he postulates that the future of Siberia is domination by the white race and a European way of development, similar to the USA, and that Siberians already have many differences from their Russian and Easy-Slavic ancestors, especially cultural differences such as love for freedom and private initiative, so Siberians should found a new nation just like the Americans did.

Resistance against Bolshevism

In 1918, Siberian nationalists revolted against the Communist Government of Russia and proclaimed the Independence of Siberia on 17 July, 1918 - the Day of Siberian Independence. In late 1918 the Russian admiral Kolchak organized a coup d'état in Siberia and formed a Russian government, while some Siberian nationalists were still members of Kolchak's government, Siberian national armies fought in the White front against Bolshevik Russia under the white-green flag.

After the fall of Kolchak, they fought for Siberian independence in different parts of Siberia until 1925, but they were all defeated by Russian Bolsheviks, who repressed the movement.

From 1989 Siberian Nationalist organizations begin to grow again. Right now there are two main branches of them: Tomsk group Sibirska Volgota ("Siberian Freedom") led by Yaroslav Zolotaryov and Irkutsk group OAS ("National Alternative of Siberia"), led by Mikhail Kulekhov. In 2005 the Siberian language was codified on the base of old Slavic dialects of Siberia. In 2006 Wikipedia in the Siberian language was launched, and in 2007 Wikislavia was founded as an general library, encyclopedia, research and educational center.
