Nature, an ambiguous term, deriving from Latin "natura" literally meaning "birth", influencing derived meanings such as "creation", "universe", "essence", and (inborn or inherited) "character" and "quality". [1]

"Nature" and "nurture" are sometimes contrasted, such as in the sense of genetic versus environmental influences. See also the article on Nature versus nurture.

The term may also refer to "the material world beyond human civilization or society; an original, wild, undomesticated condition".[1]

Especially the last meaning has influenced some combinations involving "natural", sometimes in the sense of not being "artificial" and not directly involving human "artificial" interventions, such as in "natural childbirth".

"Natural" may also be used in the sense of argued innate qualities of the universe, such as in "natural order", "natural law", and "natural science".
