The Milltown Massacre refers to the attack on Provisional IRA supports during a burial. The attack was carried out by Michael Stone, a Ulster Defence Association member.

[edit] Attack

On March 16 1988, IRA members Daniel McCann, Seán Savage and Mairéad Farrell, who had been killed by the SAS in Gibraltar, were due to be buried in the republican plot at Milltown Cemetery in west Belfast. In a change from normal security forces procedure the Royal Ulster Constabulary and British army had agreed to stay away from the funeral. The funeral service and requiem mass went ahead as planned and the cortege made its way to Milltown cemetery off the Falls Road.

As the coffins were being lowered into the ground, sounds of gunfire broke out, followed by bangs of grenades. As a result, 3 people were killed, and 60 people wounded.

[edit] Trial

Stone, confessed to the 3 Milltown murders, as well as a further 3 murdered related to Ulster activities received 682 years in prison, but was released after just 13.
