Society of Saint Pius X

The Society of Saint Pius X also known as the SSPX, or the FSSPX, is an international priestly fraternity founded in 1970 by Marcel Lefebvre (1905 1991), a traditionalist Catholic French archbishop who later clashed with the Pope over the Society. It is, named after the anti-modernist Pope Pius X, and is known for being critical of the Second Vatican Council. Tensions between the society and the Pope reached their height in 1988, with declaration of excommunication against the bishops who consecrated or were consecrated against the wishes of the Pope. In recent years, there have been moves towards reconcilliation.
