Life Savers is an American brand of ring-shaped candy, they come in many flavors inside aluminum foil packages. As of April 2008 the product is owned by the Wrigley Company. Life Savers were invented when Clarence Crane filed a lawsuit against a breath mint company after her daughter choked with one of their mints. After negotiation the company gave a disgruntled Crane a very small compensation of $2,900 so he would stop the charges, he used the money to fund a competing company of his own that would lead the former to bankruptcy. He failed to come up with a working breath freshener formula for his mints but he came up with a delicious candy, he gave this product a ring shape in order to avoid more fatal accidents. Widespread success came due to the fact that, unlike chocolate, Life Savers wouldn't melt under the heat of summer. Crane eventually could afford to buy out the breath mint company.
