John Africa

John Africa (born Vincent Leaphart) was the founder of the African-American organization MOVE. Born in West Philadelphia in 1931. Leaphart served in the Korean War, where he changed his surname to Africa, because he claims, Africa meant the origins of life. During the Mumia Abu-Jamal murder trial in 1982, Abu-Jamal wished to have Leaphart as his defense attorney.
