James Hervey Johnson

James Hervey Johnson (born August 2, 1901 Portland, Oregon - died August 6, 1988 San Diego, California) was the publisher and editor of the atheist newsletter The Truthseeker from 1964 to 1988. When Johnson died he left a $14-million estate.[1]

Early life

His grandfather was a Methodist minister and he was raised a Christian until age 14. He studied the writings of Thomas Paine, Robert G. Ingersoll and Charles Darwin and began to reread the Bible and other religious books.

In 1932 he was the county tax asser for San Diego.

In 1964 he bought The Truthseeker from Charles L. Smith and moved it from New York to San Diego.
