[edit] First Amendment of United States Constitution

People in America have the right to free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. That is the theory. The reality is subtly different. Saying the wrong thing to the wrong people does not lead to prison or death but it does lead to dismissaal. Losing your job and your livelihood has a major effect on loose tongues. Every journalist knows that even if he does not say it. Fred is different. But then he no longer works for major American newspapers. He says it in Doing The DC Bob. When people look over their shoulders before saying the unsayable means that they are intimidated.

The Guardian tells us that:- Al-Jazeera has also just become available to computer users live over broadband on the Livestation Network in every country except the US, where it is blocked. That sounds like censorship. Freedom is more honoured in the breach than the observance.
