Black Metal is a subgenre of Heavy Metal. It often displays sadistic and satanic themes. National Socialist Black Metal, often abbreviated NSBM, is musically the same as Black Metal but has nothing to do with Black Metal's lyrical themes. Indeed, it is devoted to National Socialism instead of Satanism. "Black Metal" was first coined by the band Venom.

Black Metal is widely accepted as coming in two waves. The first wave saw acts such as Britain's Venom, with their 1982 release Black Metal, and the Swedish band Bathory. Other early pioneers are Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, the Danish band Mercyful Fate and the Italian band Death SS.

The second wave came out in the early 1990s, with the help of Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Satyricon, Immortal, Darkthrone, Enslaved and Emperor.

Stylistic divisions

National Socialist Black Metal

National Socialist black metal (also known as NSBM) is a title used to refer to black metal acts with an emphasis on National Socialist beliefs in their music. NSBM is interpreted as an ideology rather than a sub-genre, as there is not any developed "style" to play black metal in a National Socialist way. Bands that promote lyrics advocating ideas of racial separatism, anti-Semitism, and Aryanism are often differentiated as "NSBM" to separate such bands from other black metal groups which do not exemplify these beliefs. Artists in the NSBM scene typically argue that Judaism, Christianity and Islam are major causes for the perceived troubles of modern European peoples. As an alternative to Christianity, most NSBM bands have advocated variations of Pagan beliefs and traditions; the most common being Ásatrú and Odinism. Paganism is also one of the things lyrics of 'common' black metal bands are about,so one could say NSBM 'adopted' this subject, or it could be seen as an influence of black metal on NSBM. Environmentalism (such as the writings of Richard Darré and Savitri Devi) and Julius Evola's teachings of traditionalism are recurring themes.
